PASSENGER TERMINAL BUILDING

UMBILICAL CORD – INTERLOCKING – EMBRACEMENT – CONNECTING – CONNECTION – HANDSHAKE

Concept:
Like an umbilical cord, the Passenger Terminal Building creates a connection between LT BCP and HYW BCP just as between mother and child. This connection allows the traffic and trade to stream freely between China and Hong Kong on separate circulations. Here we can meet and shake hands with each other.
With respecting the rules of the BCP we tried to design a terminal building which symbolises the system of the umbilical cord.
We observed the traffic reticulation of cargos and cars as determined in the competition document, and shaded it with pergola. Neverhteless we reorganized the passenger circulation to achieve equal conditions on both side. The ribbon-like paths of pedestrians start on the upper level and are braided above the no man’s land. On the other side it arrives on the podium level.
The two ribbons are like two dragons, they are scaled with exciting perforation. The two ribbons cover the coach drop-off and loading area at the same time. The two office blocks make up the third ribbon, a thicker structure bridging the river and suspending the pedestrian link. This way supporting underneath is not needed. All areas are accessible by wheelchair.

Structures of the building:
We designed pigmented, monolithic, reinforced concrete structures with interior insulation. The pedestrian corridors are made of monolithic, reinforced concrete frames.
The offices have intelligent glass facades: the outer skin consists of amorphous silicon solar cells shading the inner curtain wall and handling a significant amount of the energy needs additionally. The inner offices get natural lighting from the inner court easily. The buildings have zero emmission.
